Mental health/ Worsening situation, around 5 thousand visits per year in Shkodra

Mental health problems are becoming more and more evident every year. In the northern region, 4-5 thousand people turn to specialists for help every year. On World Mental Health Day, neuropsychiatrist Gjon Preçi has brought to attention the consequences of mass emigration. According to him, elderly and sick people have remained in their homes, which increases the difficulties of caring for this contingent.

"We have a lack of specialized resources. Which brings difficulties in treating the sick. Elderly and sick people have been left in apartments. This is an alarm bell because the lack of appropriate resources, but also of the method of care increases the difficulties. This difficulty increases in peripheral areas as the lack of these services such as transportation makes coverage impossible," said neuropsychiatrist Gjon Preçi.

Preçi also spoke about cases of non-treatment, which in many situations have ended in tragedy. The origins of which remain mental health disorders.

"Of course, there are untreated cases, which end in tragedy. There are many cases of denunciations when the sick person violates family members. But they are also afraid to denounce them because they say that the sick person may become more dangerous to them. In our opinion, the cases that are not denounced are even more numerous," said the neuropsychiatrist.

Experts have consistently called for more attention from institutions to increase capacity. Since in the northern region, the mental health center in Shkodra is the only thing that increases the difficulties of providing services./ CNA
