Family members who are in court over property with the Shkëmbi family have given their testimonies to the media today, following the serious incident this Monday, where Judge Astrit Kalaja was shot dead inside the courtroom at the Court of Appeals in Tirana.

"Today was the last trial in the Appeals Court. Today they gave us the right. The trial was for all of us, but we could not all go to court. Today was only the final decision for 30 families. I feel sorry for the judge, I will go and meet his family. He died for us, so that we would not go out because the state put us here," says one of the family members.

The family members say they have been in legal proceedings over the properties for 30 years.

"I bought this apartment where I live from Gjon Shkëmbi in 1996. I have been in court for 15 years, while Gjon Shkëmbi sold it to me with a witness, the judge has taken it to court. We are very worried about the judge and we express our condolences. My husband could have been there because he was in court on the 25th. He was unable to go today. Gjon Shkëmbi and his family deserve life imprisonment. It is difficult to enter a session with a gun, where the state is. May God and justice see because Gjon Shkëmbi appears before us as soon as we close our eyes," says a family member.

Residents say that Gjon Shkëmbi and his nephew have threatened them several times with weapons, forcibly removing them from their homes. Meanwhile, court decisions are in favor of 30 families in the area./ CNA
