UNICEF report: 85 million children worldwide are out of school

Today is World Teachers' Day, established in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, drafted in Paris on October 5, 1966.

On this occasion, UNICEF has shared some data on teachers, who are at the heart of education, but this field continues to suffer from a lack of investment and low numbers of students.

According to a report by the United Nations Children's Fund, only 31% of countries had effective teacher professional development systems, less than half of the target of 64%.

Worldwide, the report says, the number of children and youth out of school has been around 265 million for a decade, but recent estimates show the figure is rising to 272 million by 2023.

According to UNICEF, Official Development Assistance for education will decrease by US$3.2 billion, a 24% drop by 2023. This decrease would increase the number of out-of-school children worldwide from 272 million to 278 million.

Looking at the situation of children who are not attending school, UNICEF estimates that 234 million children need support to access quality education, an increase of 35 million in the last three years.

Of these 234 million children, 85 million do not attend school at all: 52% are girls, 17% are refugees or internally displaced persons, and over 20% are children with disabilities./CNA
