WHO: Europe must continue the fight against HIV/AIDS

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for a fight against HIV and the stigma around it, just ahead of an international conference on AIDS, which will start on Monday in Munich.

AIDS is caused by the HIV virus, which damages a person's immune system, leaving them vulnerable to serious infections.

The virus can be transmitted through the exchange of various body fluids from infected individuals.

While the numbers of new infections and deaths are increasing in Europe, the epidemic situation differs greatly from region to region, said the WHO regional director, Hans Kluge.

"The situation in the European region constitutes one of the most dramatic contrasts", he said.

Kluge has said that some countries have almost completely combated HIV transmission and can say that an end to AIDS is on the horizon.

In other countries, the death rate is unacceptably high, he estimated.

According to Kluge, the diagnosis of late-stage HIV remains a problem today, and he said that urgent measures must be taken to address the stigmatization of those affected.
