The most common mistake parents make when their child has a fever

Most parents understand that a low temperature helps the child's body fight infection, but one in three parents gave their child medicine to reduce the temperature, even if it was not above 38°C.

This was the conclusion from the CS Mott Children's Hospital National Survey of Children's Health from the University of Michigan, USA. The researchers' questions were answered by 1,376 parents of children aged 12 and under who were interviewed between August and September 2022.

50% of parents would use antibiotics if the temperature reached 38.0 °C and 38.8 °C, while a quarter of parents would probably give an extra dose to prevent the temperature from returning.

“Some parents may immediately rush to give their children medicine, but in most cases it's best to let the fever take its course. Because if we immediately release the fever, it does not help to cure the disease faster. There is also the risk of giving too much medication when it is not needed, causing side effects," explains Mott Children's Hospital pediatrician Dr. Susan Woolford./ CNA
