The 500-sheet fustanella of the South, the clothing of the women of Lunzheria, vests or calcas embroidered in gold, the almost lost motifs of the decor of folk clothing are being brought back to life in Gjirokastër by the designer Lizeta Hatika.

The work to recreate some of the garments has required field research, consultation with researchers and adaptation of materials.

"These are old costumes of the Vlachs of Gjirokastra, which the effect of time has disintegrated. We have been entrusted with the rework and reconstruction of all the elements that this suit has had. Most of the orders come from emigrants outside Albania who order for various family events. Last year and this year, many orders were made for engagements and weddings that they do in the countries where they live", said Lizeta Hatika.

Currently, the demands coming from the Albanians of the diaspora and the tourist market have encouraged Lizeta to look to tradition and bring back the complete clothing of some provinces.

"Even greater efforts are needed and commissions or groups of ethnographers who are well-known in this field must be assembled to put in place everything we have as part of the cultural heritage. We often see many costumes being deformed. There are attempts to create authentic materials as they once were. There are some artisans who have taken it very seriously and have started to work with those materials, just like the linen and shajak threads and materials," she told CNA.
