Referendum against the law 'On gender equality'?/ Debate at the CEC

This Monday, the Central Election Commission is holding a meeting to review the request for the provision of a standard sheet for collecting signatures for the holding of a general referendum on the repeal of Law No. 64, dated 06.11.2025 "On Gender Equality".

Today's meeting was accompanied by long discussions, which are ongoing regarding the issue, between Chief Commissioner Ilirjan Celibashi and the present representatives of this initiative from civil society.

Celibashi stated that the question about the referendum alternative should be reformulated.

"Someone who, for natural reasons, is raised only by their mother or only by their father, will need their mother to find a father, and when they are only with their father, they will also need to find a mother. I think you should reformulate it. Meanwhile, the referendum alternative should also have a 'no' answer. Ask for the concept to be included in the referendum and not the way it will be defined in the law. I think that the legal concept needs clarification, which we all understand here, but not for the ordinary citizen. You are for excluding sexual education from the 9-year education. Isn't that too much?!", said Celibashi.

One of the representatives of the initiative stated that in some points of this law, there are some rights denied.

"The moment someone is adopted by someone who does not have a clear identity and is neither a mother nor a father, from that request their rights have been denied. Sex education has brought premature information. We have more unprotected sex and abortions now than in previous years," the representative said./CNA
