Prime Minister Edi Rama today described the floods that have occurred in the country in recent days as a phenomenon created by numerous climate changes.
In his speech on the "Flasim" podcast, Rama stated that the fact that 13,160 hectares of land were affected by water is a great comfort compared to 10 years ago.
"This week has been extremely busy with rain and snow, a prolonged and severe weather condition, which has not simply affected Albania for any reason related to our country, from those reasons that boil in the 700 political media pots of the Albanian parliament, but has affected an entire map from Italy to Greece, from Montenegro to Kosovo and up to Serbia, to Croatia, and from North Macedonia to Turkey, where Istanbul experienced a situation from apocalyptic movies, where the same cold, the same rain, the same snow and the same floods and blockages, have created the same psychological situation for people.
A cold air mass from the north has collided with warm, humid air from the Mediterranean, and has created this very atmospheric vortex over Southeast Europe, bringing continuous precipitation and low temperatures.
That's why rivers rise again before they fall. That's why the ground remains saturated with water. That's why rainfall and snowfall take on abnormal proportions.
Climate change doesn't just mean hotter summers, it means erratic seasons, slow atmospheric systems, where there is no normal circulation of these flows, which is why vortices are created and then the unexpected occurrences of more extreme weather, more persistent in its extremeness.
More droughts and more fires, more atmospheric vortices and more floods, it is now a new quadrant of the climate we live in, which is no longer the climate we grew up in.
But, I am very proud of the fact that in any emergency situation, we are more ready, more prepared, more efficient, thanks to the massive investments we have made during this decade, around a quarter of a billion euros in drainage and protection infrastructure, as well as thanks to the investment in the Civil Emergencies structure, which today has trained teams, modern equipment and more means every year.
"One fact: Coming out of this atmospheric vortex with only 13,160 hectares covered by water is truly a great consolation and an indication that we live in a different Albania, because 10 years ago this vortex would have flooded two or three times this area unhindered, as it has happened," Rama said./CNA
