The referendum for the chairman of the Democratic Party is taking place this Saturday. It is a 10-hour process that extends across Tirana and the districts of the country, through which members will express their decision.

The process of electing the leader of the Democratic Party of Albania is an important step for the leadership of the largest opposition party in the country, which first began in 1991.

Throughout the journey of over three decades of this political force, a series of similar processes have developed, always aiming to select an all-encompassing figure who best represents the democrats in Albania.

In a somewhat historical look that turns back time, here is how the process of electing the Credemokrat began and continued over the years:

- December 1990/ Azem Hajdari takes over the leadership of the party without a vote, simply as acting leader

-February 1991/ Sali Berisha takes over the leadership of the Democratic Party for the first time

-September 1991/ Sali Berisha, Neritan Ceka and Azem Hajdari compete through voting in the National Assembly

-April 1992/ Eduard Selami is elected chairman, competing with Arben Imami and Azem Hajdari through voting in the National Assembly

-December 1993/ Eduard Selami is elected leader of the Democratic Party in a formal competition with Ylli Vejsi.

-March 1995/ Tritan Shehu is appointed to the leadership of the DP from his position as Secretary General

-October 1999/ Sali Berisha wins the race against the formal candidacy of Uran Butka

-December 2001, April 2005, September 2009/ Sali Berisha at the head of the DP in an unopposed race

-July 2013/ Lulzim Basha wins the elections in the race with Sokol Olldashi

The Chairman of the Democratic Party of Albania is elected through the principle of "one member, one vote." In this process, every registered member of the party has the right to vote.

The process of electing the chairman of the Democratic Party is carried out according to predetermined procedures and is regulated by internal regulations approved by the National Assembly of the Democratic Party. /CNA
