"Integration will open new doors for agriculture"/ Bergner: Education

The German Ambassador to Albania, Karl Bergner, participated in the International Conference on Life Sciences and Agriculture being held at the Agricultural University of Tirana.

Bergner said that EU integration will bring challenges and transformations, therefore adaptation is required, although it will be difficult because changes are required.

"EU membership offers opportunities and challenges, in this country over 30% of the population lives on agriculture. Agriculture provides income in marginalized areas and areas and employment both in agriculture and in tourism.

Albania is a country blessed with natural resources and agricultural potential, but how will you translate them into the European common market?

We need to discuss the challenges and opportunities because the country's journey to the EU is gaining momentum, integration is a transformation that opens new doors.

This journey will be difficult with winners and losers, there are advantages and developments.

Integration will bring increased funding for areas that enhance innovation and development. Farmers and agribusinesses will be funded, there is so much need for education, because mindsets and capacities need to be adapted.

Experts will be trained, science will be connected to practice, and there will be adaptation at every level.

I want to mention the reform of UBT, BOKU has played an important role.

We provide 30-40 million euros for international cooperation and will continue to do so. At the policy level, we work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture. We have increased efforts and funding for the food security chapter.

Agriculture and Rural Development extends beyond the Albanian border with the aim of bringing the Western Balkans closer to the EU.

"Adapting to EU standards, to market changes, to the expectations of future generations is the key, if you don't adapt, the environment will not forgive you. I know that adaptation is change and change scares me," Bergner declared./ CNA
