Animals can help mentally ill people

There is a lot of evidence that keeping animals in the home is beneficial, but recent research has found that animals can play an important role in the day-to-day management of mental illness.

When people with severe mental illness are asked what helps them manage their condition, many say animals.

In a study published by 'BMC Psychiatry', 60% of the respondents put animals in the first place for help, while only 40% put them in the second place.

During interviews with participants, researcher Helen Brooks from the University of Manchester and her colleagues found that animals helped people with mental problems manage their feelings.


They also found that animals have special significance for people who had limited or difficult relationships with other people.

However, she added that new research is needed to understand the gap between human and animal welfare, especially for people who struggle to care for themselves.
