"Whistling during Israel's performance will not be covered"/

Austria has shared its decisions ahead of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, clarifying that all official flags will be allowed in public and that people's whistling or cheering will not be covered up with artificial applause.

On Tuesday, December 16, the contest's executive producer, Michael Krenn, clarified that it will not ban the Palestinian flag in public, nor will it cover up the boos during Israel's performance with artificial applause, unlike what has happened in previous contests.

"We will allow all official flags that exist in the world, as long as they comply with the law and meet certain conditions, such as size and safety rules. We will not embellish the situation or avoid showing what is happening, because our job is to present things as they are," Krenn said.

"We will not introduce artificial applause at any point," said ORF program director Stephanie Grois Horowitz.

The 70th Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Vienna in May 2026, will take place with just 35 participants, after five countries, including Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands, decided to boycott the contest in protest at Israel's participation.

An institution traditionally associated with music, diversity and entertainment spectacle has been at the center of a fierce diplomatic debate, with countries arguing that Israel's participation is incompatible with the number of civilians killed in the Gaza Strip. /CNA
