Auction/Treasures from the Rothschild family collection fetched over $62 million

 

A large collection of art, furniture, silver, ceramics and jewelry long held in the private collection of the Rothschild "banking dynasty" sold for more than $62.6 million at several auctions in New York.

The sales, which ended Tuesday, marked the first dedicated North American auction of works and items from the long-standing French branch of the family .

Most of the items were purchased in the 19th century by Baron James Mayer de Rothschild, his wife Betty and their son Alphonse and have remained in the collection of their descendants ever since.

Among the oldest items on sale was a portrait of the Roman emperor Claudius from the first century AD, which fetched $116,000./ CNA
