Japanese anti-nuclear group wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize this year has been awarded to the Japanese group, Nihon Hidankyo, an organization of survivors of the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

They constantly call for the abandonment of nuclear weapons.

"The roots of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors' movement, also known as Hibakusha, is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to make a world without nuclear weapons, and for showing us as a witness that nuclear weapons should not never to be used again", said the Committee, as it announced the winner.

"The extraordinary efforts of Nihon Hidankyo and other Hibakusha representatives have greatly contributed to the creation of the nuclear taboo."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the news on Friday from Oslo, selecting this group from among 197 individuals and 89 organizations nominated.

The prize is worth about 1 million dollars.

Last year, the Iranian activist for women's rights, Narges Mohammadi, was honored with this award./ REL
