BYZANTINE FORUM or MARKET

The monuments of the Byzantine Period are clear indicators of the preservation of the importance of Dyrrachium in the 4th-6th centuries, when it also became the center of the province of New Epirus.

The Byzantine Forum in Durrës, dating back to the 5th century and attributed to the Dyrrachian emperor Anastasius I, now known as the Byzantine Forum, served as both a marketplace and a venue for official events for two centuries. The Forum is considered one of the best-preserved structures in the city and is recognized as one of the most beautiful monuments of the late Roman and early Byzantine periods in Albania.

After fulfilling its function for two centuries, it was finally transformed into a cemetery in the 7th century.

The ancient forum consists of a 40-meter circular square surrounded by a colonnade of 40 Corinthian columns. Of the original 40 columns, only 12 remain, some of which are complete and others damaged. Recent excavations suggest that the forum may have had a longer history than previously thought, with two or three Roman phases preceding the investiture of Anastasius in the 5th century.

This indicates that the aforementioned century intervention may have been a renovation project of an existing monument.

The forum has only one clearly identifiable entrance, which is located on the eastern side and is connected to a walkway, an entrance which still serves as such today.

In its middle there is a concrete center with a circular podium with steps. The rotunda is thought to have served as the base of an important monument or as an indicator of the starting point of the Via Egnatia. The paving (floor) and colonnade are entirely made of Proconnesian marble.

We invite you to watch the video produced as part of the project "Come and get to know my city" supported by the Municipality of Durrës.
