Italian-Albanian drug organization dismantled/ 9 arrests, 20 kg of cocaine

Italian Police units executed, between the provinces of Florence and Siena, a preliminary arrest warrant issued by the Florence Preliminary Investigation Judge. The warrant ordered nine arrests (eight pre-trial detentions, one under house arrest) against individuals seriously suspected of belonging to an Italian-Albanian criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking.

As reported by Italian media, the investigations led to the seizure of 20 kilograms of cocaine. Possession of the cocaine for trafficking was attributed to two individuals (an Italian citizen and an Albanian citizen), arrested in April 2023 in San Gimignano.

Ongoing investigations by the Organized Crime Investigation Group (GICO) led to the identification of a larger, younger and more independent criminal network compared to those previously known. This network included individuals with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, with logistical and operational bases in Tuscany and supply channels in Lombardy.

The leaders of the group, two Albanian nationals living between Castelfiorentino and Colle Val d'Elsa, created strategies and supply channels, detention and storage locations, as well as the selling prices of narcotics, as well as the recipients of the drugs.

Their trusted contacts managed drug depots, narcotics transfers, and prepared shipments to be sent to clients, receiving payments for the shipments. Numerous couriers were also assigned to act as "custodians."

Some of the suspects were officially employed as van drivers/couriers for "third-party road freight companies" and exploited this work to forge product shipments by using plastic shipping bags to conceal quantities of drugs to be sent to customers. /CNA
