Spectacular theft in Germany/ They open a hole in the safe, the thieves run away with the bank's money

In Gelsenkirchen, Germany, a spectacular theft occurred in a savings bank building.

According to a police statement, unknown perpetrators took advantage of the holiday calm to open a hole in the safe with a drilling machine and search several safes.

The theft was discovered at around 3:58 a.m. when the local fire station received a fire alarm. Police and the fire department then searched the building and discovered the entrance to the vault in the basement.

According to current information, the perpetrators gained access to the building through a neighboring parking garage and apparently escaped with their loot that way as well.

There is no information yet on the amount of loss. Police have launched a wide-ranging investigation. /CNA
