Trump meets Norwegian PM/Discusses trade and Ukraine war

President Donald Trump hosted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for a meeting at the White House.

Støre's visit came just over two weeks after Trump halted and reduced reciprocal tariffs on more than 75 countries. Norway was among the early U.S. allies embroiled in the trade spat, receiving a 15 percent import tariff that could be reimposed by July after a 90-day pause.

But the meetings gave no sign that a revised trade deal is imminent.

In a statement to reporters, Trump said he believes Russia is still interested in peace with Ukraine and later said he would suspend consideration of additional sanctions until it is clearer whether a ceasefire agreement can be reached.

Trump told reporters during a luncheon in the Cabinet Room that Norwegian officials should keep doing what they're doing, saying the Nordic nation has always been an ally and a friend. But Trump, who has long criticized America's trade deficits, also made the point about Norway's $2 billion trade surplus with Washington.

The Ukraine-Russia war was also discussed. Earlier in the day, Trump posted on social media that he was not happy with Russia's launch of a massive missile and drone attack on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities. /CNA
