Trump meets with Merz/ White House discussions on trade deal

Friedrich Merz, the newly inaugurated German Chancellor, is at the White House today for his first personal meeting with President Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump on Thursday struck a positive tone on a potential trade deal with the European Union during a meeting at the White House with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"We're going to have a good trade deal. I think that's going to be determined largely by the European Union, but you're a very big part of that, so you're going to be involved," Trump said.

Trump's major tariffs on the EU, including a 50% tariff, have been postponed until July 9. Germany is still affected by the tariffs, including Trump's 25% tariff on vehicles, which is in effect.

The president said he hopes there will be a trade deal, or the United States will impose tariffs.

"I mean, I agree with the tariffs, or we'll make a deal with trade, and I think that's what we're discussing," the president said./CNA
