Gunshots and fire in the infamous "Evin" prison

A huge fire broke out on Saturday at Iran's notorious Evin prison, known for housing political prisoners, journalists and foreign nationals.

Videos shared online showed flames and smoke at the site in Tehran, and gunshots and explosions were heard.

An official quoted by state media said the situation was under control, but video footage showed the fire continuing.

Iran has been engulfed in anti-government protests for weeks.

They first erupted last month following the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in police custody. Officials said she died of a heart attack, but her family disputed that, saying she had been beaten by police.

BBC Persian's Rana Rahimpour said it was not yet known whether the situation at the prison was linked to the recent demonstrations.

But this can easily happen, Rana said, since hundreds of protesters have been sent to Evin./ CNA.al
