German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Saturday for the enlargement of the European Union.

He said in his speech at the Congress of European Social Democrats in Berlin that doing so would make the bloc better able to face global challenges.

Since taking office, Mr. Scholz has made the expansion of the European Union with the Balkan countries and others a priority of his foreign policy.

This issue has become more urgent since the beginning of Russian aggression in Ukraine, which became a candidate for EU membership at the beginning of the summer.

"Një BE me 27, 30, 36 shtete, me më shumë se 500 milionë qytetarë të lirë dhe të barabartë, mund të ketë peshë edhe më të madhe në botë," tha zoti Scholz në kongres.

"Unë jam i përkushtuar ndaj zgjerimit të BE-së. Zgjerimi i BE-së drejt lindjes, do të ishte e favorshme për të gjithë ne," tha ai.

Kancelari Scholz bëri gjithashtu thirrje për reforma në Bashkimin Evropian, për të cilat tha se do të ndihmonin për realizimin e zgjerimit dhe do të bënin të mundur një autonomi ushtarake të bllokut prej 27 vendesh.

Zoti Scholz foli për nevojën e heqjes graduale të parimit të unanimitetit për vendimet në politikën e jashtme, por edhe në fusha të tjera si politika tatimore.

“Nëse aspirata jonë është një Evropë gjeopolitike, atëherë vendimet e shumicës janë një forcim dhe jo një humbje e sovranitetit", tha ai.

Currently, many EU decisions can only be taken if all countries vote unanimously.

Mr Scholz also supports more military autonomy for the EU. He called for coordination in the supply of arms and equipment and the creation of an EU rapid reaction force by 2025.

"In Europe, we need better interoperability of our defense efforts," he said. "In the future, Europe will need a coordinated increase in capabilities. We must move European defense forward with conviction and together."/ Voa
