Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU must protect its share of "green technologies" as they are developing rapidly around the world.
"Europe was once a world leader in solar energy, but state-subsidized competitors from China started offering better prices and today China controls 90% of the global market," Von der Leyen said.
During a debate in the European Parliament, the Commission president stressed that Europe must not repeat the mistakes of the past.
She mentioned the Middle East and the so-called "Global South" as regions competing with Europe for a place in the global race for green technology.
The European Commission aims for renewable sources and other forms of clean energy to provide 50% of the world's energy and for the clean technology market to grow from €600 billion to €2 trillion over the next ten years.
The EU wants to control 15% of this global cleantech production, with the corresponding European market set to grow to 375 billion euros by 2035, according to Commission forecasts. /CNA
