Hours after the spectacular Louvre robbery, another museum in France is robbed

A robbery has taken place at another museum in France. The theft took place at the Maison des Lumieres museum, dedicated to philosopher Denis Diderot, just hours after the spectacular robbery at the Louvre.

The perpetrators of the robbery stole gold and silver coins from the museum while it was closed for a holiday. Taking advantage of the closure of the museum, located in the town of Langres in the Haute-Marne region in northeastern France, the robbers forced their way in through the front door and smashed a display case.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that part of the museum's treasure trove, a collection of silver and gold coins that had been discovered during renovation work at the Hotel du Breuil, which now houses the museum, was missing. The display case that protected them was found broken on the ground. 

According to the information that was made public, in total, the perpetrators stole 1,633 silver coins and 319 gold coins, dating from 1790 to 1840.

"Law enforcement authorities were immediately notified and went to the scene. Accompanied by the person responsible for the site, they carried out a thorough inspection of the museum. According to initial observations, part of the 'museum treasure' has disappeared. Museum teams are currently making an accurate record of the objects that they will hand over to the police ," a city press release said.

The Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot museum will remain closed until further notice and private security will provide surveillance. /CNA
