Earthquake in Rhodes/Epicenter in the northeast of the Greek island

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck the eastern island of Rhodes in Greece.

According to the Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens, its epicenter was located 35 kilometers northeast of the island at a depth of 30.7 kilometers.

Greek seismologist Efthymis Lekkas told public broadcaster ERT that the earthquake was typical for the area and not a cause for concern.

"The earthquake occurred in an area with frequent seismic activity. It is a typical earthquake for the region; there is no cause for concern," the seismologist said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Greece lies in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, although serious damage or casualties from earthquakes are rare. /CNA
