Prison sentence/ Former French President Sarkozy will have permanent police protection

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be protected by two police officers stationed in neighboring cells during his time in prison.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said two police officers from a security unit that protects former presidents would be permanently placed in neighboring cells during Sarkozy's imprisonment.

"The former president of the republic is entitled to protection due to his status. There is undoubtedly a threat against him and this protection is being maintained while he is in custody," Nunez told Europe 1 radio.

Sarkozy entered prison on Tuesday to begin serving a five-year sentence for a criminal conspiracy to finance his 2007 election campaign with funds from Libya. He is the first former leader of modern France to be imprisoned.

Sarkozy is being held in the La Sante isolation unit. Prisoners are kept in single cells and do not interact during outdoor activities, meaning Sarkozy must avoid contact with other prisoners. /CNA
