Spain, thousands of people protest after devastating floods

Thousands of people took to the streets of Valencia on Saturday to demand that regional authorities be held accountable for how they handled the situation after massive flooding that killed more than 220 people. At least 80 people are missing from flooding in the Valencia region.

The protesters, who gathered in the city center, called for the resignation of the regional leader Calros Mazon, holding him responsible for the mismanagement of the crisis.

The protest, organized by more than 30 civil society organizations, was a sign of opposition to what residents describe as the delayed response of emergency teams. According to the protesters, the Mazon regional leader issued the alarm hours after several villages were inundated by floodwaters across the region.

During the protest, there were moments of tension, as some of the residents hit police officers with various objects and clashed with the authorities.

The protest, a display of communal anger, highlighted the deep sense of loss across the region as well as increasing calls for justice in the wake of the disaster.
