The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated this afternoon that the EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and called for restraint.

In a statement, Kallas said she had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the EU ambassador in Caracas.

"The EU has consistently stated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has advocated a peaceful transition. In all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected," Kallas said.

Kallas said the security of EU citizens in Venezuela was the bloc's top priority.

US President Donald Trump announced this Saturday that the United States carried out airstrikes on Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, removing them by plane from the country.

According to Trump, the operation involved U.S. law enforcement and followed overnight bombings in Caracas and other regions, after which Venezuela declared a state of emergency. The attacks came after months of escalating U.S. pressure on suspected drug trafficking, with the U.S. labeling Maduro's government a narco-terrorist state. /CNA
