2025, the warmest year in the history of the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, known for its foggy and humid climate, experienced its warmest and sunniest year on record in 2025. In a statement, the Met Office called it a clear indicator of climate change.

With an average temperature of 10.09 degrees Celsius, 2025 broke the previous record of 10.03 degrees Celsius set in 2022. The ten warmest years have all been recorded in the last two decades.

"This shows increasingly clearly the impact of climate change on temperatures in the UK ," the Met Office said. The Met Office added that 2025 was the sunniest year in the country since records began in 1910.

The nearly 1,648.5 hours of sunshine surpassed the previous record set in 2003 by 61.4 hours. This very warm year is consistent with the expected effects of human-caused climate change, explained Mark McCarthy, climate expert at the Met Office.

"While this does not mean that every year will be the warmest ever recorded, our meteorological observations and climate models clearly show that global warming is having an impact on the UK's climate ," he added.

Records followed each other last year: spring and then summer were the warmest ever recorded. Winter and autumn saw above-average temperatures. The summer of 2025 saw four heat waves. However, the record temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius, recorded in July 2022, was not broken.

"While many will remember the exceptionally warm spring and summer of 2025, what was exceptional this year was the consistent heat throughout the year, with every month, apart from January and September, being warmer than average ," said Emily Carlisle, a scientist at the Met Office.

England also experienced its driest spring in more than 100 years in 2025. In mid-August, the Environment Agency declared water shortages in England an “issue of national importance.” Yorkshire, in northern England, has banned watering gardens. /CNA
