White House confirms Trump-Putin meeting in Anchorage, Alaska

President Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, for what White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt called a "listening exercise."

"Only one side that is involved in the war will be present and so this is for the president to go and better understand how we hope to bring this war to an end," Leavitt told reporters.

Switzerland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates had been among the countries speculated for the closely watched summit, the first meeting between Putin and a US president since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"A lot of places were discussed, but of course, Alaska is a state within the United States of America, so the president is very honored," Leavitt said.

A location for the meeting has not been made public, but Anchorage, a city of about 300,000, is already seeing an influx of officials and journalists seeking hotel rooms and other facilities to cover the high-level talks. /CNA
