EU Foreign Ministers: Transatlantic unity to support Ukraine

EU foreign ministers called on Monday for transatlantic unity to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia after an emergency meeting called ahead of a Trump-Putin summit this week.

Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, said after the informal virtual foreign affairs council, which was also attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, that the ministers expressed support for US steps that will lead to a just peace.

"Transatlantic unity, support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia is how we will end this war and prevent future Russian aggression in Europe. In the meantime, we work for more sanctions against Russia, more military support for Ukraine and more support for Ukraine's budgetary needs and the accession process to join the EU," Kallas said.

The meeting was hastily called on Sunday after the announcement two days earlier that US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would meet on August 15 in Alaska./CNA
