President Trump declares criminal emergency in Washington

US President Donald Trump today signed an executive order declaring a criminal emergency in the District of Columbia to protect public employees, citizens and tourists, and to ensure the safe operation of the Federal government.

In a press conference, the President determined that special conditions of an emergency nature exist, requiring the use of the services of the Metropolitan Police Department to maintain law and order, to protect federal buildings, national monuments and other federal property, and to ensure the orderly functioning of the Federal Government.

The order relies on the President's authority under the District of Columbia Home Rule and Government Reorganization Act to require the Mayor to make the services of the Metropolitan Police Department available to the President.

The order delegates this authority to the Attorney General, who will also monitor emergency conditions and provide the President with regular updates on the status of the emergency.

The Attorney General will recommend further action or termination of emergency measures according to the circumstances. /CNA
