White House: Here's when Trump will meet with Venezuelan opposition leader

The White House has confirmed that Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado will meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday.

The visit comes just weeks after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested in Caracas by US forces. Trump refused to support Machado, whose movement claimed victory in the widely contested 2024 elections. Instead, the US backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's former vice president, to lead the country temporarily.

Machado said last week that he hoped to personally thank Trump for taking action against Maduro and would like to award the Nobel Prize to him. Trump called it a great honor, but the Nobel Institute in Norway later clarified that the prize could not be divided or transferred.

Previously, Trump had expressed displeasure over Machado's decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor the president has long coveted.

Earlier this month, after Maduro's ouster, Trump said Machado lacks domestic support or respect.

The US has so far backed Delcy Rodríguez as interim president of Venezuela. Trump describes Rodríguez as an "ally" and she has not been accused by US officials of any crime. /CNA
