Protests of the people of Iran/ EP President takes drastic decision for Iranian

EP President Roberta Metsola has banned any representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran from entering the premises of the European Parliament.

In a post on "X", Metsola states that while the people of Iran are protesting for their rights and freedom, business cannot continue as usual.

She emphasizes that the EP will not help legitimize the regime that, according to her, has been supported through torture, repression and murder.

It cannot be business as usual. As the brave people of Iran continue to stand up for their rights and freedom, I have today taken the decision to ban all diplomatic staff and any other representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran from all premises of the European Parliament. This House will not help legitimize this regime that has been sustained through torture, oppression and murder.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said it had verified the deaths of 495 protesters and 48 security personnel across the country. The agency said another 10,600 people had been arrested during the two weeks of unrest.

Protests that began over soaring inflation are now calling for an end to the clerical rule of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The unrest, sparked by an economic crisis, devaluation of the national currency and an energy crisis, has spread to many Iranian cities.

US President Donald Trump has expressed support for Iranian protesters and increased pressure on the authoritarian regime in Tehran, which has ruled the country since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. /CNA
