The US calls on Pyongyang to end arms negotiations with Moscow

The United States is concerned that arms talks between Russia and North Korea are actively progressing, White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Mr Kirby said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had recently gone to North Korea to try to persuade Pyongyang to sell artillery ammunition to Russia.

Zori Kirby said Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had exchanged letters pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation, and said the United States had information that another group of Russian officials had traveled to Pyongyang after the visit of the Minister of Defense.

Under the agreements, Russia would be supplied with weapons that the military plans to use in the war with Ukraine, Mr. Kirby said. The deals could also include raw materials that would help Russia's defense industrial base.

Mr Kirby said any arms deal between Russia and North Korea would be in breach of a United Nations Security Council resolution.

"We call on North Korea to end its arms negotiations with Russia and honor the public commitments it has made not to enable or sell arms to Russia," Mr. Kirby told reporters./ VOA
