Ukraine security summit/ Macron gathers 27 European leaders

French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting European leaders, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, for a summit on Thursday aimed at boosting Ukrainian security ahead of any possible ceasefire with Russia to end the more than three-year war.

The meeting aims to determine what security guarantees Europe can offer Ukraine once a ceasefire agreement is reached, including the possible deployment of military forces from a so-called "coalition of the willing."

Twenty-seven heads of state and government will participate in the Paris summit, which is taking place upon their arrival at the Elysee Palace, where they were personally welcomed by Macron.

Macron will give a press conference in the afternoon summarizing the discussions while other leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, are expected to hold their own briefings.

NATO's key member Turkey, currently under scrutiny due to protests in the country, will be represented by Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz.

Macron and Starmer have taken the lead in trying to create a coordinated European response to Ukraine's defense as during the current conflict.

In addition to boosting Ukraine's armed forces, a key pillar to ensure security and prevent any further Russian invasion could be the deployment of European troops in Ukraine, although the modalities are unclear.

Macron also announced a new French military aid package of 2 billion euros or $2.2 billion for Ukraine, with Paris ready to rapidly send existing equipment from its stocks. /CNA
