New executive order/ Trump signs new election order

President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order that will require potential voters to show proof of citizenship to register to vote. The sweeping changes in the order test the strength of Trump's presidential authority.

Voting rights advocates say the new provisions could block millions of Americans from voting if passed. The order claims that the United States must implement basic and necessary election protections.

The order calls for updating the federal form that voters can use to register to vote to include a requirement that voters show proof of citizenship, such as a passport, to a local or state official.

States have long had considerable leeway in how they manage their elections. The federal government has been able to set some minimum standards for federal contests, though usually through legislation.

The order also requires states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, calls on states and federal agencies to share data to prosecute election crimes, and gives federal agencies, including the Department of Government Efficiency’s task force, access to review state rolls for compliance with federal requirements. It also directs federal agencies to share data with states, such as immigration and Social Security records, to make it easier for states to check the eligibility of names on their voter rolls.

Voting rights advocates, however, warn that outdated databases can mistakenly list naturalized citizens as noncitizens. Previous attempts by states to purge noncitizens from voter rolls have sometimes included legitimate U.S. citizens.

The executive order also seeks to prohibit states from counting mail-in or absentee ballots received after Election Day, barring funds from states that allow such ballots to be counted./CNA
