Russia arrests a German citizen, accuses him of sabotage

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday it has arrested a German national it accused of planning to sabotage energy facilities on the orders of a Ukrainian national.

The FSB said in a statement, published by Russian news agencies, that it arrested German national Nikolai Gayduk as he was entering Russia's Kaliningrad from Poland.

She said that she found and confiscated half a liter of liquid explosives in his car.

The Russian security service did not say whether Gayduk also has Russian citizenship, or whether he had a visa to enter Russia.

It is not known when he was arrested.

The FSB accused Gayduk, who is a Hamburg resident born in 1967, of planning acts of sabotage on the orders of a Ukrainian, Alexander Zhorov, who also lives in Hamburg.

She said that Gayduk was involved in an explosion at a gas distribution station in Kaliningrad in March 2024 and that he has been charged with terrorist attack and smuggling of explosives.

A court ordered that Gayduk be held in custody pending trial, pending the conclusion of the investigation, Russian news agency Interfax reported. She gave no other details.

The German authorities have not yet commented on the news./ REL
