Biden agrees to give Ukraine land mines

US President Joe Biden has agreed to give Ukraine landmines, a US defense official told the BBC, a move seen as an attempt to slow down Russian troops who have been steadily advancing in eastern Ukraine in recent months.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said such mines would be delivered soon and Washington expected them to be used on Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine was also committed to not using mines in densely populated areas, the official said.

The US State Department said its embassy in Kiev would be closed after it "received specific information about a possible significant airstrike on November 20".

Overnight, both Ukraine and Russia reported major drone strikes on their respective territories.

The landmine security is the last step by the outgoing US administration to bolster Ukraine's war effort before Donald Trump returns to the White House on January 20./ CNA
