Trump nominates Howard Lutnick for Secretary of Commerce

US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Howard Lutnick for US Secretary of Commerce – a figure who is expected to take a tough approach to China.

Lutnick will also lead the state's tariff and trade agenda, with "direct responsibility for the Office of the US Trade Representative," Trump said in a statement.

Tariffs are a key item on Trump's economic agenda, and he has promised to impose comprehensive trade measures on all imports when he returns to the White House.

Lutnick is chief executive of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, and a Trump ally.

His name was first mentioned for the position of Secretary of the Treasury.

However, in the end he was selected for Commerce, the smallest department, which works to increase American industry and has an important role to reduce the state's dependence on Asia.

Under US President Joe Biden, the Commerce Department has increased controls on the export of technologies that could be threatened by rivals such as Beijing.

The Trump administration may take an even tougher approach.
