Russia: Ukraine's membership in NATO unacceptable in any form

Russia has said Ukraine's admission to the US-led NATO military alliance would be unacceptable, in part or in any other form, according to Reuters.

"Whether in part or in any form, Ukraine's accession to NATO is unacceptable to Russia," Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry, told reporters.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, a former NATO secretary general, has presented a proposal for Ukraine to join the military alliance without territories controlled by Russia.

Rasmussen has said that the cause of Ukraine's NATO membership cannot be postponed again next year. He said: “The time has come to take the next step and extend an invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. We need a new European security architecture, in which Ukraine is at the heart of NATO."/ CNA
