The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has increased his criticism of Israel, calling it a "terrorist state" that aims to destroy Gaza and its inhabitants.

During a speech to his party, Erdogan also said on November 15 that Turkey will take steps to ensure that Israel's political and military leaders face trials before international courts.

"Israel is implementing the strategy of total destruction of a city and its inhabitants," Erdogan said.

"I say openly that Israel is a terrorist state," added the Turkish leader.

Erdogan has described the fighters of Hamas - a Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - as "resistance fighters" who, according to him, are trying to defend their land and people.

Turkey has recently normalized relations with Israel. But the Israel-Hamas war - which started at the beginning of October - in Gaza has once again worsened the relations between Turkey and Israel.

Israel last month withdrew diplomats from Turkey after Erdogan accused Israel of committing war crimes. Turkey then withdrew its ambassador from Israel./ REL
