Missiles over Lebanon, Israel strikes Hezbollah targets in Beirut

A series of powerful explosions rocked the southern suburbs of Beirut in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after Israel launched airstrikes in response to rockets fired by the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militia.

According to reports from the ground, a large explosion was heard in the Baabda area, as Israeli aircraft struck targets suspected of being linked to Hezbollah structures. Thick smoke was seen over several neighborhoods of the capital Beirut, while residents reported noises, explosions and flames on the horizon.

The Israeli military said it had targeted a senior Hezbollah official in Beirut, without giving details on his identity or fate. At the same time, Israeli authorities confirmed that the strikes were in response to rockets and drones fired towards Israeli territory overnight.

In Tel Aviv and other areas of central Israel, alarm sirens sounded early in the morning, as air defense systems were activated to intercept shells coming from the north.

Lebanese officials have not yet released a full toll of the damage and casualties, but preliminary reports indicate material damage to several residential buildings. Meanwhile, tensions on Lebanon's southern border remain high, with fears of a wider escalation of the conflict.
