Protest for the Albanian language in Skopje / Three Albanian students arrested

Three Albanian students have been arrested in a protest in Skopje demanding that the bar exam be held in Albanian. The reasons for the protesters' arrest are still unknown.

The organizer of the protest, Mevlan Ademi, stated that the protest does not aim to clash, but to protect linguistic rights and institutional equality.

"Today I did not come to talk to them. Today I came to talk to you. How long should we wait for an Albanian to speak Albanian in his own city? How long should we wait to be equal citizens in this country? We are autochthonous here," said Ademi.

In protest, students have demanded the resignation of the Minister of Justice in North Macedonia. The rally took place near the Stone Bridge in Skopje, where thousands of students from the Albanian regions participated. This is the second protest that comes as an expression of the students' revolt after the rejection of their demand by the current Minister of Justice, Igor Filkov.

According to the Law on the Bar Exam in North Macedonia, there is no restriction that requires the exam to be taken only in Macedonian. The Law on the Use of Languages, adopted in 2019, obliges state institutions to allow the use of Albanian if at least 20% of citizens speak this language.

Article 2 and Article 5 of this law clearly stipulate that state institutions and courts must enable the use of the Albanian language in all official procedures. /CNA
