Former senior Brazilian official, Flordelis dos Santos de Souza

Former high-ranking Brazilian official Flordelis dos Santos de Souza has been found guilty of murdering her husband Anderson do Carmo.

She was sentenced to 50 years and 28 days in prison and some of the couple's children are also accomplices.

Dos Santos and Do Carmo had gained fame in Brazil because they had adopted children from the poorest neighborhoods of Rio De Janieros, about 55 children.

The daughter of the former official was sentenced to 31 years in prison for the murder of her father, while one of the sons was also sentenced to 33 years in prison as an accomplice in the crime (he was the victim's stepfather).

Do Carmo's murder shocked Brazil where he was found dead outside his home in Rio De Janeiro. Dos Santos claimed at the time that several armed robbers on motorcycles had followed and attacked her husband.

But police investigations later implicated dos Santos in her husband's murder in collaboration with some of their children.
