Warning: Europe could face jet fuel shortage within three weeks

Europe could face jet fuel shortages if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened in a sustainable manner within the next three weeks.

That's what the Airports Council International (ACI) of Europe - which represents over 600 airports across the continent - has warned. ACI called on the EU to take immediate action to avoid such a scenario in a letter to the European Commission yesterday, according to CNN.

Some of the measures include collective EU purchasing and a temporary easing of regulations that hinder the continent's ability to import jet fuel. The group also called on the European Commission to carry out its own assessment and monitoring of jet fuel production and availability.

"If a supply crisis were to occur, it would severely disrupt air travel and significantly damage the European economy, exacerbating the impact of rising oil prices. Any fuel shortage would affect Europe's exports, 26% of which are handled by airports, as well as citizens as the peak summer travel season approaches," the Council warned.

Jet fuel prices have doubled since the US and Israel launched military operations in Iran. The US and Iran have currently reached a two-week ceasefire while negotiations between delegations from both countries are expected to take place in Pakistan. /CNA
