Pope Leo XIV arrived in Lebanon today, where he is expected to call for peace in a country that is a constant target of Israeli airstrikes, in the second and final leg of his first overseas trip as leader of the Catholic Church.
The Pope departed from Turkey, where he held a four-day visit, and warned that the future of humanity was at risk due to the unusual number of bloody conflicts in the world.
Hours before the Pope's arrival, large crowds gathered along the roads from the airport to the presidential palace, waving Lebanese and Vatican flags. The Pope will meet with the president and prime minister and deliver a speech.
Lebanon, which has the largest Christian population in the Middle East, has been rocked by the spread of the Gaza conflict, as Israel and the Lebanese Shiite Muslim militant group Hezbollah went to war, culminating in a devastating Israeli offensive.
The Pope was transported in a closed popemobile, arriving at the palace in a torrential downpour, with crowds of people under white umbrellas cheering and a welcome band performing a traditional dance. /CNA
