Fabergé's 'Winter Egg', Romanov treasure, sells for over

A rare Fabergé egg, known as the “Winter Egg,” commissioned by Russia’s last Emperor Nicholas II for his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, is expected to sell for more than £20 million (around €22.8 million). The extraordinary egg, crafted in 1913, is adorned with 4,500 rose-cut diamonds and delicate platinum snowflake-shaped settings.

According to Margo Oganesian, director of Fabergé and Russian Works at Christie's, the creation of the egg was an incredibly challenging undertaking, using pure crystal and exceptional craftsmanship to carve the oval shape and detailed design of the snowflakes. Each imperial egg took a year to design and produce and was an extraordinary expense by the standards of the time, one that only the Romanov family could afford.

The “Winter Egg” has previously set world records, and its upcoming auction marks the first time in more than 20 years that an Imperial Easter Egg has been available on the public market. According to Oganesian, this egg is complete with the original surprise inside, making it one of the rarest and most valuable examples of Fabergé’s creations.

The auction will be held on December 2 in London by Christie's auction house, bringing this historic treasure back into the international spotlight. Only six other imperial eggs remain in private collections, making the "Winter Egg" one of the rarest gems of Russian art and history. /CNA
