French investigative judges on Wednesday placed Russian tycoon Alexey Kuzmichev under formal investigation, a source in the financial prosecutor's office said, according to Reuters.

Kuzmichev, who had been held for questioning since Monday, was placed under official investigation on charges of laundering the proceeds of tax evasion, money laundering and undercover operations, the source said.

A lawyer for Kuzmichev declined to comment.

While the financial prosecutor's office had requested that Kuzmichev be placed in custody, he will be released under judicial supervision, the source said.

Searches were carried out on Monday at Kuzmichev's home in Paris and in the Var Mediterranean region as part of the investigation.

Being placed under official investigation in France does not imply guilt or necessarily lead to a trial, but indicates that the judicial authorities consider the case to have enough to continue the investigation.

It can take years before such investigations are either brought to trial or closed.

French customs agents last year seized the oligarch's 27-metre yacht La Petite Ourse as part of European Union sanctions over his ties to President Vladimir Putin.

The move sparked a legal battle between the authorities and Kuzmichev, one of the co-founders of Russia's Alfa Bank, who sold his shares after the outbreak of war in Ukraine./ CNA
