Widening conflict in Lebanon/ UN: At least 30,000 people have sought protection in shelters

The Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah launched missiles and drones toward Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, and the Israeli military responded with heavy air strikes and a ground intervention, widening the conflict.

As a result, according to the United Nations, at least 30,000 people have been displaced and have sought protection in shelters in Lebanon.

Babar Baloch, spokesman for the UN refugee agency, said estimates suggest nearly 30,000 people were sheltered and registered in shelters, with many more forced to sleep in their cars on the side of the road.

On Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he and Benjamin Netanyahu approved the decision for the Israeli army to advance and occupy additional areas in Lebanon, with the aim of preventing the launch of more rockets at Israeli border settlements. /CNA
