UN: Hundreds of migrants missing and victims of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean

Hundreds of people may have disappeared at sea or are believed to have drowned in the Central Mediterranean over the past few days, the United Nations migration agency has warned.

According to the agency, there have been many shipwrecks over the past ten days, and based on preliminary information, search and rescue has been greatly hampered by bad weather.

An official said three drownings were reported on January 23 and 25, with a possible death toll of at least 104. The boats were believed to have set sail from Tunisia and Libya.

The agency is also investigating reports of nine other missing ships that left Tunisia between January 14 and 21, with about 380 people on board.  

In 2025, at least 1,340 people lost their lives on this migration route, while since 2014, more than 33,000 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean./ CNA
